And as someone else mentioned, I think it has enough people that like it as well.įor my state, archery season goes from Oct 1st to Jan 1st for the entire state, with a few counties having it extended to Feb 1st. I’ve read several stories of hunters accidentally being shot with rifles, but never heard it happening with a ML. So factors like reducing the likelihood of over-harvesting, and making public lands safer for ‘firearm’ hunting are likely reasons DNRs keep the season around. The ML season in my state doesn’t seem super popular, but the rifle season is quite busy. The season doesn’t last but 2 weeks for our regions here, and on some public lands, you can’t hunt sundays (so effectively only 2-3 extra days of hunting for majority of public land hunters). ![]() ![]() Additionally, muzzleloader seasons seem to be pretty short to me. So if you prefer using a bow, there’s nothing really stopping you besides a little more pressure. I’ve never seen a state that won’t allow you to use a bow during muzzleloader season either, but I’ve only hunted in 3-4 states for deer. Common Cartridge rifles have a much further effective range compared to any muzzleloader, and also provide quick follow up shots if needed. Some states group it in a primitive season, and allow things such as pneumatic rifles as well during the same time (can’t remember the state). Some states limit the muzzleloader to a primitive muzzleloader, meaning no scopes can be used (or must be a flintlock even I think in pa?). With the exception of better in-line modern muzzleloaders, a shooter generally won’t shoot past 100 yards with a muzzleloader. I would think the answer falls somewhere in the middle within the question “why is there an archery season, why not allow rifles to hunt during the entire season?” The same reasons archery has a much longer season compared to rifles can be partially applied to muzzelloaders as well I would think.
